LIFE LINES

September 5, 2010

“In Him we live and move and have

our being.”
(Acts 17:28)

Many are the questions which people have about abortion. some try to give reasons why abortion is not wrong and some are really aimed at finding out the truth.  So, this issue will address some of the most frequently asked questions.

When does a baby’s heart begin to beat?

Starting from the very moment of conception, the baby begins to grow complete with its own DNA which it will have all through life, but the heart actually begins to beat on the 21st day.

When does the brain begin functioning?

The foundations of the brain, nervous system and spinal cord are in place on the 20th day and by the 40th day electrical brain waves have been recorded.

At what point can the baby survive outside the womb?

Currently twenty weeks is considered the accepted minimum, but as technology advances, the time will be reduced.

Why can’t one have an abortion if rape or incest has caused the pregnancy?

The mother has been through a terrifying trauma ... she has been victimized by a violent act, but to take the life of a baby is committing an even more violent act on a second innocent victim.  These situations need handling with compassion and care.

But what about the baby who is diagnosed with a fatal disease or a handicap which will prevent a normal life?

To counter that question, would you kill a handicapped person or a person who is suffering from cancer just because you think there should never be any suffering?  Just because the baby’s home is in the womb and therefore out of sight doesn’t mean that killing is acceptable.

Well, what about the population boom?

In the United States according to the latest census, there is a birth every 8 seconds and a death every 11 seconds; so our population is growing at less than 1% which is not a problem.

How can a girl give up her own baby for adoption and go through life never knowing what happened to her child?

Which is better to remember?  ”I gave my baby life and because of love gave him or her a home with a loving family .... Or to remember, “I ended my baby’s life so that he or she could never live outside the womb?”

These questions and answers can be found at abortion.com

PRAYER DURING TIME OF ECONOMIC CRISIS

Gracious God,
We know that your love is infinite and that you care about all areas of our life.
In this time of economic insecurity, help us to trust that all of our security is in you.
Keep us mindful that you always have and always will provide for our needs.
Apart from you we can do nothing.

Merciful God,
We ask that you give our leaders the wisdom to guide our nation and the world
out of the current economic crisis.
Help us to protect the poor and all those who are struggling during this difficult time.
Provide for their needs and give them hope.
Open new opportunities for them and furnish the resources they need to live with dignity.  Encourage those who have enough to share essential resources
with those who lack the necessities of life,
and to do so with humble, grateful and loving hearts.

We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.  Amen.
