The Catholic Prison Ministry at the Clark County Detention Center (CCDC) is in need of additional volunteers to serve as lay ministers to the men and women incarcerated at the CCDC.  If you have at least one Saturday afternoon a month to share your Catholic faith, you can make a lifetime of difference to these prisoners.

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada can not accept goods for Haiti such as food, clothing, or toiletries because we do not have the capacity to ship the goods.  We are asking the community to send their cash donations Catholic Relief Services or to the American Red Cross, or other legitimate relief organizations. The local and national emergency services presently are not accepting material goods until they have an organized system in place to accept these kinds of donations.

Thank you for your concern.

LIFE LINES
Week of February 28, 2010

“Return to the Lord your God
for gracious and
merciful is He”

                       (Joel 2:13)

One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the gift of life ... life so that we may “know, love and serve Him in this world and be happy with Him in the next,” (Baltimore Catechism).  Along with this gift of life, He gave us the gift of Free Will and that’s where we often stub our souls.  Choices present themselves to us; unfortunately, if we choose the wrong ones, they become chains binding us.  An all too familiar example of wrong choice is unplanned pregnancy.  Panic clouds the mind.  Loud societal voices proclaim that it is acceptable to get rid of the “unwanted embryo.”   Fear drives women down the path which appears to eliminate the problem.  Yet, as with any bad choice, it doesn’t get rid of the problem; it only multiplies it.
To survive the emotional trauma following an abortion, the mother has to build a false world to help her cope.  In the Universe Bulletin, a Catholic newspaper, Fr. Damien Ference writes a powerful article about a post abortion workshop that he and some fellow priests attended. One lesson stressed was that a priest in the confessional must not only “absolve the sins, but must restore the woman’s dignity.”
Another part of the workshop featured the voice of experience, a woman who dealt with the agony of an abortion and finally found healing. In her witness she stated that women who have chosen abortions tell three stories, but only one of the stories is true.  The first story comes before the abortion giving all the reasons for choosing to abort... rationalizations that make the choice the best or perhaps the only choice available.  The second story follows the abortion and is told in past tense.  She tells of the circumstances as she perceived them at the time; she may exhibit guilt and/or sorrow, but she will still rationalize that there was no better choice available.  Why?  She hasn’t yet  realized her personal role and sees  outside factors as having been responsible.  The third story cannot be  told until she has gone through a forgiveness and healing. The blinders come off; through God’s grace she sees herself as having been broken but now healed by a forgiving and merciful Father.
In our diocese, there is a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat for post abortion women and men to find this healing and to feel the compassion and mercy of a loving God who will never abandon any of His children.  Please, if you are one of those people stuck at the second story level, pick up the phone and call the hot line for Rachel’s Vineyard, (702) 737-1672.  It will be  hope restoring  ... You will hear God calling you to “Come back to Me with all your heart!”

PRAYER DURING TIME OF ECONOMIC CRISIS

Gracious God,
We know that your love is infinite and that you care about all areas of our life.
In this time of economic insecurity, help us to trust that all of our security is in you.
Keep us mindful that you always have and always will provide for our needs.
Apart from you we can do nothing.

Merciful God,
We ask that you give our leaders the wisdom to guide our nation and the world
out of the current economic crisis.
Help us to protect the poor and all those who are struggling during this difficult time.
Provide for their needs and give them hope.
Open new opportunities for them and furnish the resources they need to live with dignity.  Encourage those who have enough to share essential resources
with those who lack the necessities of life,
and to do so with humble, grateful and loving hearts.

We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.  Amen.
