Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Tuesday, May 22, 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the UNLV Student Union Ballroom something quite remarkable will occur. Faith leaders and community members from all over the Las Vegas Valley will come together to focus on issues impacting families and to build an organizational response that offers great promise over time. I encourage you to join me in attending this event. In addition to me, the Lutheran, Methodist and Episcopal bishops will be present with leaders from 65 churches, synagogues, mosques, schools and non-profits. Many of our priests and parishes in the Diocese of Las Vegas are already encouraging or directly involved in this ground- breaking effort. This growing list includes: St. Christopher, Christ the King, St Andrew, Holy Family, St Peter, St John Neumann, St Thomas Aquinas Newman Center, and St Joseph, Husband of Mary. To those who aren’t, permit me to express my encouragement in the strongest possible terms that you send a delegation to discover what this work is all about. Please consider getting directly involved in this vital effort. In these challenging times we hear the drumbeat of growing human needs in the Las Vegas Valley. Issues from human trafficking, particularly of minors, neighborhood crime and blight, the isolation of vulnerable elderly, immigrant integration and education require a deeply collaborative response. The First Las Vegas Valley Community Convention for the Common Good on May 22 is just such a response. I encourage you to take this opportunity to step forward with others in a prayerful and constructive manner to help make our Valley a better place for children, for families, for the vulnerable, for all of us.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Bishop Joseph A Pepe |

Roman Catholic Marriage in Las Vegas
There is no "quickie" way for Catholics to be married in Las Vegas. Catholic marriages (as a valid sacramental union) cannot be witnessed in a hotel, casino, wedding chapel or outdoor arena in Las Vegas. Roman Catholics wishing to marry validly should be suspect of any so-called (roman) catholic priest offering such accommodations. For further information, please contact the Diocesan Tribunal Office, 702-735-1210, Monsignor Francis Vivona, S.T.M., J.C.L.

On Ascension Sunday we are reminded that Jesus is on his throne.
Do we allow him to reign over our lives?
One of the ways we show this is by living in humility, gentleness and love in a bond of peace. Do we reflect this in our marriage relationship? Allow Jesus to be Lord of your marriage relationship; attend a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend and let God strengthen, renew and rekindle your sacrament.
The next weekend is September 28-30 in the Las Vegas area. Early registration is highly recommended.
For more information, call Wayne and Marcia Kessler at 702-566-8753. For information on Spanish-language weekends, call Jose and Patti Santiago at 702-326-2453.

LIFE LINES
Updated 5/17/12
“...I will demand an accounting for human life: If anyone sheds the blood of man,
by man will his blood be shed;
For in the image of God,
has man been made.”
(Genesis (:5-7)
Life News on April 18 reported that during an annual “Pro-Life Legislative Day” in Montgomery, Alabama in April, the attendees heard a surprise witness, Ed Henry, a Republican representative in the state assembly tell an emotional real life experience of how abortion has affected him. His reason for speaking at the rally was to help people understand why elective abortion should never be part of health care insurance plans. Earlier in the rally, he was moved by the experience that a woman from Birmingham shared with the crowd. She had been forced by “her gun-toting boyfriend” to go through with an abortion twenty-five years earlier; that action crippled her with regret psychologically.
As he listened to her story and talked with her later he decided he needed to share his story which he had never vocalized before. In his own words, “It ripped my heart out with the devastation these abortions cause. In ’91 I was in a similar situation where I had a girlfriend who was with child and I made a decision that I will regret — that we went and I murdered my child, my first child. I’ve never said this publicly,” he said “as he choked back tears”. He said the impact of it hit him several years later, when he was 30 and his wife was 12 weeks pregnant with their daughter. He recounted accompanying her for a medical checkup. “I saw that ultrasound of my baby, my child, and it came down on me like a ton of bricks that I had murdered my first child. And I will carry that with me to my grave.”
Andy Moore, who writes a pro-life blog, used the story to point out that it is important for men to have a voice in the abortion debate. Too often society thinks that abortion is a decision between “a woman and her doctor” but that is not the truth. Those who champion abortion as a solution tell men that they are not involved in the abortion debate. Really! Half of the babies killed in the womb are male and 100% of the aborted babies leave behind a father of a dead child.
Abortion affects us all, because we have all been created by God and therefore belong to one human family. Therefore, each of us is responsible to do our part to overturn Roe vs Wade and Doe vs Bolton. How do we do that, you ask? Through letters and telephone calls to the elected officials and through constant prayer and sacrifice asking God to send his Holy Spirit to enlighten the hearts and minds of those immersed in the abortion mentality.

PRAYER DURING TIME OF ECONOMIC CRISIS
Gracious God,
We know that your love is infinite and that you care about all areas of our life.
In this time of economic insecurity, help us to trust that all of our security is in you.
Keep us mindful that you always have and always will provide for our needs.
Apart from you we can do nothing.
Merciful God,
We ask that you give our leaders the wisdom to guide our nation and the world
out of the current economic crisis.
Help us to protect the poor and all those who are struggling during this difficult time.
Provide for their needs and give them hope.
Open new opportunities for them and furnish the resources they need to live with dignity. Encourage those who have enough to share essential resources
with those who lack the necessities of life,
and to do so with humble, grateful and loving hearts.
We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
